TVSEP seminar at Hue University of Agriculture and Forest (HUAF)

On March 29 2017, TVSEP organized a seminar to introduce the project at HUAF. It was attended by more than 30 participants from different research institutes and universities in Vietnam such as Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry; Hue University of Economics; Ha Noi University of Forestry; Ho Chi Minh University of Agriculture and Forestry; Tay Nguyen University; Can Tho University as well as TVSEP field supervisors and enumerators.

The seminar started with the opportunities of using the TVSEP database introduced by Dr. Rattiya Lippe, Research Database Manager from Leibniz Universitaet Hannover.  Two research examples using TVSEP data are presented by Assit. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Thanh of the Institute for Environmental Economics and World Trade, Leibniz Universitaet Hannover cum TVSEP National Research Coordinator of Vietnam. The first study is published in the World Development Journal “Determinants of farmers’ land use decision-making: Comparative evidence from Thailand and Vietnam”, which uses panel data in 2007 and 2012 from both Thailand and Vietnam. The subsequent research, “Livestock Production, Rural Poverty, and Perceived Shocks: Evidence from Panel Data for Vietnam”, currently under review after resubmission in the Journal of Development Studies, only contains Vietnam data.  Furthermore, two research proposals using TVSEP data are presented by Assoc. Prof. Suwana Praneetvatakul, TVSEP National Coordinator in Thailand and Dr. Nguyen Duc Loc and Dr. Dang Kim Khoi, Directors of the Centre for Agricultural Policy in South and North Vietnam reveals that TVSEP data can provide opportunities for analyses on agricultural transformation of Thailand and Vietnam, respectively. Throughout the seminar, it is observed that quality panel data are needed for different research purposes: master and PhD theses, policy evaluation and analysis, as well as context analyses for better understanding and meeting the needs of the societies. Special thanks to HUAF and TVSEP staffs in Vietnam for organizing the seminar.
