TVSEP Covid-19 Survey in Thailand completed

The household survey implemented during November and December 2020 to measure the impact of Covid-19 in Northeast Thailand was completed on Christmas Day, 25 December. The survey team of the TVSEP Data Collection Center at Ubon Ratchathani University held their final meeting in the Province of Nakhon Phanom. The conduct of the survey has been a big challenge, because the TVSEP team from LUH was not able to go to Thailand for the supervision of the survey, as was the case during the many TVSEP survey waves in the past. All training and supervision had to be done via online formats.

TVSEP Covid-19 survey 2020 in Thailand

The survey in Thailand is progressing well. The training of enumerators took place at V-Hotel, Ubon Ratchathani from 12 – 19 November 2020. The training included 20 enumerators, 3 on-the-spot trainers (Ms Chomphunut Kantabussabong, Ms Pintong Lekan and Mr. Ekachai Aowacheewin) and 2 long-distance trainers from TVSEP headquarters at LUH (Mr. Niels Wendt and Prof. Hermann Waibel) as well as administrative and technical support from TVSEP Office at Ubon Ratchathani University, namely by Ms Yok Wannakham and Mr. Nopporn Tantsiri. The training was quite challenging due to the difference in time zones.

COVID-19 Special survey starting

09 November 2020

TVSEP is starting its COVID-19 special survey among its 2200 households in 220 villages in three provinces in Northeast Thailand. The survey commences with the training of provincial team leaders from 9 - 11 November, followed by the enumerator training from 12 - 19 November.

In memory of Professor Dr. Stephan Klasen

With deep sadness, we herewith inform all of our TVSEP partners and friends about the passing of Professor Stephan Klasen from the University of Göttingen. Professor Klasen has been a key founding member of TVSEP and its predecessor project, the DFG Research Unit 756. Undoubtedly, without having him on board, neither project would have materialized. Stephan Klasen led and was involved in numerous research initiatives within his university, and within the German and the international research community on economic development. In addition, he was engaged in numerous high-impact policy advisory activities. Bearing that in mind, his unconditional commitment to TVSEP deserves our utmost recognition and respect.

TVSEP Second data user conference

On 4th September 2020, the Thailand Vietnam Socio Economic Panel (TVSEP), a DFG-sponsored long-term project based at the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), School of Economics and Management held its Second Data User Conference. The Conference was jointly organized with TVSEP’s research partner in Thailand, the Ubon Ratchathani University (UBU), during UBU’s 14th Annual Research Conference.

TVSEP Webinar

19 May 2020

The TVSEP Project Management Team held a joint webinar with TVSEP representatives from Thailand and Vietnam and TVSEP data users. Around 40 researchers from various backgrounds participated in the webinar.
The aim of the webinar was to bring together TVSEP partners and data users to discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic can be best captured in future TVSEP panel waves or special Add-on projects. The unique, long-term panel database of TVSEP is particularly suited to measure the impact of this exceptional crisis. TVSEP has the capacity to collecting and providing valuable information to researchers and policy makers to analyze and monitor the short- and long-term consequences of the crisis.
TVSEP representatives from Thailand and Vietnam presented first-hand information on the current situation, expectations and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the respective country.

TVSEP Presentation at Leibniz Universität Hannover

21 January 2020

The TVSEP Project Management Team, Profs Ulrike Grote, Stephan Thomsen and Hermann Waibel, gave a presentation in the framework of one of the faculty's three Reseach Foci: "Nachhaltige Globalisierung". The seminar was attended by a large number of researchers, including Professors from LUH and the University of Göttingen as well as post-docs and PhD students. There was a broad interest in TVSEP's activities and the seminar generated new ideas on collaborative research making use of the TVSEP data.

TVSEP at annual meeting of the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA)

The Allied Social Science Association (ASSA) held its annual meeting from January 3-5, 2020 in San Diego ( Each year the ASSA meetings bring together researchers from all over the world to discuss current economic topics.

New position of TVSEP research assistant

Ms Yok Wannakham (MSc) has been chosen for the position of TVSEP research assistant among nine candidates by the selection committee which included Dr. Yada Pheunpha, Mr. Nopporn Tantsiri, Dr. Buraskorn Torut, Ms Marina Bergmeier and Prof. Hermann Waibel at Ubon Ratchathnai University (UBU) on December 11, 2019. TVSEP welcomes Ms Yok Wannakham to its team and is looking forward to a long-term and fruitful cooperation.


12 - 14 December 2019

The Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics ( held its third conference at the National University of Singapore (NUS) from December 12 to 14, 2019. The primary aim of the society is promoting research and cooperation in labour and applied economics across the region of Asian and Australasia. The conference thus offered an excellent opportunity to introduce TVSEP as a valuable research data source. Four researchers presented TVSEP in a special 2-hour session on December 13 (TVSEP - A Panel Survey for Economic Studies in Thailand and Vietnam).

New TVSEP household panel wave released

We are pleased to announce the completion of data cleaning and the release of the dataset for the eighth TVSEP household panel wave (2019). In the following week, all relevant documents will be added to the 'Documentation' section.

Access for research use is free of charge. Interested scientists may submit a 1-2 page research outline.

TVSEP Research presented at IARIW Conference

TVSEP Research Director

TVSEP first data user and planning conference

The Thailand Vietnam Socio Economic Panel (TVSEP) project organized its first data user and planning conference/workshop on April 4 and 5 in Da Nang City, Vietnam.

The conference with the title "Poverty Dynamics and Sustainable Development in Thailand and Vietnam: Research results of 2015-2018 and Prospects for TVSEP phase II" was jointly organized between Da Nang Economic University (DEU) and TVSEP country office at Da Nang.

Migrant Tracking Survey 2018 completed

After the first migrant tracking survey in 2010, TVSEP has carried out this survey again from July to September 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang City in Vietnam.

Prof. Andreas Wagener †

We hereby want to inform all our TVSEP partners and friends about the death of Professor Andreas Wagener who passed away unexpectedly during the night of 29 January, 2019. Professor Wagener has been a member of the TVSEP Project Management Team since the start of the project in 2015. He was also a principal investigator in the TVSEP predecessor project, the DFG FOR 756, since 2010.

We are extremely sad. Andreas has been such a wonderful colleague and friend. He has always been of great support to the project, contributing with his research and his advice especially to the TVSEP group in Thailand. We will never forget Andreas with his friendly and open style and his constant motivation and encouragement for all of us. He will continue to live in our hearts and minds.
