TVSEP meeting with Asian Development Bank (ADB) Thailand Country Office

TVSEP meeting with Asian Development Bank (ADB) Thailand Country Office

TVSEP Coordinator Hermann Waibel and TVSEP IT Expert Niels Wendt during their trip to Thailand, held a meeting with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 24 February 2022. From ADB side, Jay Roop (environmental expert), Srinivasan Ancha (ADB’s climate change focal point for Southeast Asia) and Armin Bauer (ADB consultant) participated in the meeting. ADB is an important lender to Thailand, whose economy experienced a 6.1 % decline in GDP in 2021 and only a 0,8 % growth in 2021, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For example, ADB is supporting Thailand with a $1.5 billion loan to finance Covid-19 mitigation measures. Therefore, ADB is interested in TVSEP’s panel data, especially the 2020 special Covid-19 survey, for measuring impact of its loan for the rural population. Furthermore, ADB also supports a project on organic rice in the province of Yasothon, a neighbouring province to the TVSEP province Ubon Ratchathani. Hence, the TVSEP data could be used as counterfactual in impact assessment studies. ADB expressed strong interest in a policy synthesis of TVSEP’s research papers on Thailand and Vietnam. Both sides agreed to continue the exchange of ideas and options for further cooperation between TVSEP and ADB. Another meeting (online) including the ADB office in Vietnam was envisaged.
