Conferences and workshops (since 2019)
- In June 2023, Robyn Blake-Rath participated in the German Development Economics Conference in Dresden. The conference was organized by the Verein für Socialpolitik, the Technical University Dresden, together with, the ZIS and sponsored by the KFW.
- In May 2023, Robyn Blake-Rath and Soschia Karimi participated in the 5th workshop on "Applied Economics" for young scientists which took place in Hannover.
- In March 2023, Ulrike Grote and Hermann Waibel organized a symposium and a session at the conference of the Asian Society of Agricultural Economists (ASAE) in collaboration with the Agricultural Economics Society of Japan (AESJ) in Tokyo with a total of eight presentations based on TVSEP data. - In May 2022, Krisztina Kis-Katos and Ute Rink organized the International TVSEP Conference on “Shocks and resilience in rural Southeast Asia” in Göttingen. The conference included 54 in person and about 30 online participants, two keynotes and a panel discussion on the “Prospects and challenges of long-term panels”. Beyond participants affiliated to German universities, international participants came from Australia (U Queensland, Wilfried Lauriel U), Canada (U Saskatchewan), Spain (UAB, Barcelona), Thailand (TDRI, Kasetsart U, Ubon Ratchathani U), UK (U Manchester, U Cambridge), and USA (Cornell U). Moreover, best past publications were showcased and best research prizes were awarded. The easing of travel restrictions also made it possible for five colleagues from Thailand to participate in presence in the international TVSEP conference and a face-to-face coordination meeting between the Thai and the German partners took place. - In February 2022, Hermann Waibel and Niels Wendt held a seminar with Asian Development Bank (ADB) staff in Bangkok to explore cooperation opportunities. ADB is particularly interested in the 2020/21 special COVID-19 survey for measuring the impacts of its loan to Thailand on the rural population. Furthermore, ADB supports a project on organic rice in the province of Yasothon, a neighboring province to the TVSEP province Ubon Ratchathani. Hence, the TVSEP data could be used as counterfactual in impact assessment studies.
- In February 2022, the Vietnam Country Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a conference (hybrid) with Joseph E. Stiglitz as keynote speaker and Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP. Hermann Waibel was invited to a special session to give a speech on TVSEP’s research output in Vietnam.
- In December 2021, Hermann Waibel together with Sabine Liebenehm, Mark Brooks and Chompunuch Nantajit organized a session with the title: "Panel Data Collection and Sustainable Land Use in Asia" at the 10th Asian Society of Agricultural Economists (ASEA) International Conference in Beijing (online).
- In November 2020, Ulrike Grote gave a seminar on the TVSEP project at the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG), University of Cambridge, UK. The research stay of the doctoral student Eva Seewald in spring/summer 2022 at the University of Cambridge has continued the cooperation with C-EENRG and the exchange on TVSEP research.
- In September 2020, TVSEP’s partner university in Thailand, the Ubon Ratchathani University, in close cooperation with Hermann Waibel and active involvement of the TVSEP Team, organized its "Annual Data User (Online) Conference". The purpose of the conference was to present and discuss results and progress of research carried out by TVSEP data users from Thailand and Vietnam. About 60 participants attended the conference.
- In May 2020, Stephan Thomsen and Wiebke Stein organized an online workshop with project partners from Thailand and Vietnam and TVSEP data users to facilitate exchange on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the survey areas. The workshop was attended by around 40 international researchers.
- In January 2020, Wiebke Stein and Ute Rink represented the TVSEP at the DFG booth at the Annual Meeting of the Allied Social Sciences Association (ASSA meetings) in San Diego.
- In 2019, Stephan Thomsen organized a TVSEP conference session at the Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) in Singapore in which he and three other TVSEP researchers (Sabine Liebenehm, Andre Gröger and Wiebke Stein) presented findings from TVSEP projects.
Furthermore, TVSEP researchers including doctoral students and post-docs have presented and discussed results at many international and national conferences which contributed to the increased visibility of the TVSEP project internationally. During the last three years, these included the following:

Awards
In 2022, Sabine Liebenehm received the Best Paper Award at the International TVSEP Conference in Göttingen, whereas the Best Student Paper Awards went to Maria Hart and David Granada.
In 2021, Wiebke Stein received the Victor Rizkallah Award for her outstanding PhD thesis on “Debt, Personality and Well-being in Southeast Asia”.
In 2020, Sina Bierkamp received the Hans Hartwig Ruthenberg Graduate Award for her outstanding Master thesis that used TVSEP data.
